Software doesn't wear out like a vehicle — but everything around it changes. Browsers update, libraries get vulnerabilities, certificates expire, vendors change APIs, data grows. Maintenance is how your system keeps up with a moving world.
What maintenance actually includes
Proper maintenance is a cycle: monitor for errors, apply updates, verify backups, review security advisories, fix small faults before they cascade, and report plainly each month. It's unglamorous and enormously valuable.
What it prevents
The incidents we get called to urgently — expired certificates taking down client portals, unpatched libraries exploited, backups that were never tested, integrations broken for weeks unnoticed — are nearly all maintenance failures. Each costs multiples of a year's maintenance to fix under pressure.
Maintenance vs insurance
Think of it as combined insurance and servicing. You wouldn't run delivery vehicles with no services and no tracking. Business software carries more value per rand than any vehicle — yet often gets less care.
What to ask any maintenance provider
What's included monthly, what counts as extra, what are the response targets, how is work reported, and what happens in an emergency? Vague answers here predict vague service later. Get it in writing.
